All of the thickness gauges out there are built from standard, professional micrometers, with superb pedigrees. These are precision instruments - to be kept in a dust-proof box on a safe shelf, and not to be thrown into your oboe case!
Mine is built from a micrometer of Japanese make, "Mitutoyo", and I have seen these micrometers sold by many different firms. Shop around - the difference in price can be more than 100 US Dollars.
Regarding the "Density meter". I have only ever seen this on youtube, though I can imagine what it does; it probably raises and lowers a narrow extension within the probe, which "pokes" the gouged cane and presses into it, partially. this adjusts the number on the dial, and you calculate the difference between the two readings as an indication of hardness. A fingernail is less accurate but much less fiddly - and one less thing to go wrong with your micrometer.
