Checking the reed by playing it in the corner of the mouth is an unfortunately widespread but inherently flawed diagnostic. The lip muscles do wrap all around the mouth, and they allow even the corners of the embouchure to exert some control over the reed. But more importantly, holding the reed at the side of the mouth changes its angle of entrance. This means less air flows into the reed, and that air has to change direction in order to flow through the reed. I've attached two sketches to illustrate. Sketch 1 is a bird's eye view of the airflow in the mouth meeting the reed when it is held normally. Sketch 2 is a bird's eye view of the airflow in the mouth meeting the reed when it is held at the side of the embouchure. These sketches aren't to scale, but hopefully they get the point across alright.
