lots and lots of factors: your health (respiratory, adequate sleep etc. ), temperature, humidity, leakage, cane density and age, soaking time, whether or not your oboe is warm enough to play...
The easiest thing of course for many an oboist is to BLAME THE WEATHER whenever a reed changes abruptly.
Of course, if you're going to make a habit of that, keep a wide variety of different strength reeds in your box as back-up!
PS my 'reed making period' can last for months as I usually do incremental adjustments every couple of days. This naturally doesn't suit everyone but I seem to like to take my time. The result is I have 3-4 'finished' reeds, 4-5 reeds 'in process', and 4-5 reeds 'just starting out' plus blanks.
