Re: Gouger And Cane new variable

I attended oboe pedagogy class today at Arizona State University (which isn't really pedagogy, but rather oboe fundamentals) and Day One was how to select, split, process, and gouge a single piece of cane. Martin's studio has 4 gouging machines including a Ross, Udo Heng (Reed's and Stuff), an RDG, and a Graf, and he showed the class the differences between all of them and how to adjust them. (Then he told them never to adjust the machines themselves, and that they should always ask him, but I digress.)

In any case, he stated that he does not gouge his own cane to save a dollar or for any commercial purposes, but strictly for quality control. The word "consistency" was emphasized over and over, and Martin summed it up by saying, "I have no problem throwing out 27 pieces and keeping three if the three pieces are of consistent superior quality."

So what I'm trying to say is I think you're certainly on to something!
