Re: Treble Shawm & Side Drum...

I've got my first engagement with this combination for a prestigious dinner do this Wednesday coming - so with the side drummer who's playing an old rope tension drum and myself on Baroque oboe d'amore we'll march onto the dinner call with Boyce's 'Heart of Oak' then into 'Roast Beef', then march off playing either 'Portsmouth' or 'British Grenadiers'. Should be good.

I'm using the Baroque oboe d'amore as this is pitched in A but at 415Hz, so is in effect the same as being pitched in concert Ab - or with identical fingerings it's the same as a Bb flute (xxx|xxx sounding concert Bb) but sounding an 8ve lower.

It's only a cheap maple oboe d'amore (made by Dirk Kloeffer and based on an Eichentopf d'amore) I bought for around £250, but I stained the maple to look like ebony and painted the decorative turnings with acrylic paint to look like ivory rather than it being all dark brown so it looks pretty much like the oboe on the right in this picture but with black wood contrasting with the ivory rings: http://www.guntramwolf.de/pics_high/Scherer_440.jpg. And fortunately a clarinet marching lyre clamp fits around the middle socket so I can play from A5 sized cards.

Though we will be in modern Naval officers No.1s for this rather than period Marines uniform from Nelson's era - I'm also on bass drum with the Corps of Drums for this same engagement as I was here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_7gDnwH0YY&feature=related, so looking forward to the gig. Shame I wasn't on this gig http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=do5FUdVSHqI, but I look forward to doing this static on Wednesday.
