I view the issue as one of children being pressured to switch to a different instrument to conform to adult needs, rather than as a merely technical issue. If these two kids really are "promising" oboists, if I were their teacher, I would do everything in my power to encourage them to continue with an instrument that they evidently already love, rather than allow the school to force them, however well-meant it may be, to change.
If the school band really needs a bassoon, why don't they persuade one of the multitudinous flutes or clarinets to switch?
