 Larilee Oboes

I'm shopping around for oboes and have come across a really nice looking Larilee oboe. I've never had any prior experience with them, and was wondering if they are a good brand. Does anyone know anything about them?

I played one way back in college back ing the mid-1960s. Very good playing instrument for a university owned instrument; better than the other option I had back then which was a selmer. For english horn the university only owned a Selmer but it worked well.

I don't have any knowledge if the current made instruments play like those over 40 years old. The description of the model 400W looks like what i played on. woodwind/brasswind has it for sale at $2000

Hi there....you were asking about Larilee oboes....I can remember hearing about the Larilee Corporation & their fine oboes ever since I first started beginning band back in junior high (in the late '60's.....so I'm not so young as I used to be, ha!!!) Going thru high school & college & then doing church orchestra & community band work since then, I've encountered Larilee oboes & their players from time to time & I've never heard anything but good things from both!!! Recently, I've had the privilege of acquiring a "vintage" Larilee top-of-their-line oboe (from about 1981 or so)....*beautiful* instrument, made from the really good grenadilla wood of many years past which tends to be denser & sounder & less prone to cracking than the newer wood....this oboe is crack-free; & has had an all-cork pad job done on it!!! (before I acquired it, by a previous owner). I called up the Larilee Corp. in Elkhart, Indiana with the serial # & left a request on their answering machine for any info they could give me on it....imagine my pleasant surprise a few days later when my phone call was returned by none other than the *President* of the Larilee Corp....Mr. Larry Lee Linton (yes, I think it was either his Dad or Grandad that decided to name the instrument line-up after him!!!) How cool is *that*??? Anyway, "Mr. LarryLee" was very kind & helpful & of course knowledgeable about his company's instruments; and he invited me to send the oboe to him & the repair dept. to take a look at & see how it has held up over the years & also if it needs any 'TLC", etc. I'm looking forward to getting it back & trying it out.....BTW I only paid $664.00 for it......the same model is worth $3,000 and/or more today!!! I've always had good experiences with Larilee oboes in playing alongside them as a flutist & clarinetist; now I hope to actually be playing one soon!!! Hope this helps a little...I recommend them, especially as to their quality & affordability.

I have had a Larilee oboe since Fall of 1968 and it's still a wonderful instrument. One of the other posters alluded to contacting the company and getting such a wonderful response from them - I've had the exact same thing happen. The company is in the family and thus they care about it and the oboes they make.

That oboe went through Jr. High, Sr. High, college and beyond and has traveled all over the U.S. with me and is still in very good shape, other than needing a couple of pads replaced.

I recommend Larilee oboes to anyone who has a need for an oboe. If considering an older one I wouldn't hesitate to buy it if you can tell it's been well cared for by the owner. Sometimes the older instruments just sound better too - maybe it's the change in the instrument as it's used - seems to be mellower. Or maybe it's just that I got to be a better oboe player the longer I played it! :-)

I play my high school's larilee oboe, I'm not sure how old it is...pretty old...but it is a FABULOUS oboe. It's wood with the Bflat key...It's the oboe I started to learn on! Because of the age it tends to be very...tempermental. But it's such a good brand...good luck finding one!

Hi there,

I am about to put my Larilee, from 1981 on ebay. It was an advanced student level (not quite professional) with extra keys that I now have forgotten. It's in great condition. No cracks, I think I actually still have the original sales receipt if you can imagine.

Anyone interested in seeing photos, I'm glad to email them to you.

I have one of my own Larilees I got it used I love it. It isnt in the best condition the previous owners must have abused it, but after a few repairs it plays quite nicely, better than my schools Fox. I love playing my Larilee it has a great sound I have nothing but praise for it!
