Could you explain what "thumbplate" and "auto" or "semi-auto" octaves are?

I have a Rigoutat; don't see anything resembling a "plate" for either thumb, and I can't figure how an "auto" octave would work...how would the oboe know whether you wanted to use the octave key or not?

Confused.
