Your description of the Hovhaness work reminds me of Holst's Terzetto for flute, oboe, and viola, in which each instrument plays a similar line but in a different key and at overlapping times. It is both polyphonic and polyrhythmic. On first reading with the ensemble we were all incredulous; after we grew familiar with the work, it all made perfect sense.
