The great source of information on wind instrument makers is the New Langwill Index. Mark Charette, our grand guru, owns a copy. You can reach him at charette@woodwind.org.

If the maker is not listed in Langwill, the instrument is undoubtedly a "stencil" -- that is, made by a large maker (probably in Europe) without a trademark and sold to a small company, or even local music store, which put on its own name.

Stencils are difficult to link to the true maker. You need to be familiar with the large makers and the nuances of their key designs.

Your best bet is not to worry about the maker, but take the oboe to a competent repair shop and get an opinion on whether it's worth the cost of putting it in playing condition.
