 Re: dark vs. bright?

Hi there,

I believe that it all depends on where you come from and your own opinions. I think it may be a good to combine both- using either dark or bright in different kinds of music. I personally prefer to have a dark sound with wide vibrato and smooth note wailing above. That's my natural sound.

Here in England, I think people prefer to have a bright sound...but it seems to be different in other countries. Most of my fellow oboe players here play on Howarth oboes, which are a very good oboe make, and which produce a bright sound. I play on a (french) Marigaux Oboe because I prefer a darker, richer sound rather than the bright one. This way, I stand out from the rest and I am noticed within my playing a lot more. I like it that way.

You can get different makes of oboes, and different woods to suit the sound you want to make- and you can even own more than one oboe if you like- I do!

Good luck, but remember it's all up to you and what you want to do with your tone!
