All I know is that James is dead wright!
Some year ago,had the opportunity to talk with Werner Herbers(former principal of the Royal concertgebouw Orchestra) and het told me that not so long ago Emanuel Abuhl substituded as pricipal.
Werner had his thoughts about the playing(did not like it at all).
After the concert the first of the second violin players came to him and told him how much he liked Abuhl`s playing that evening and how much it reminded him of Hakon Stotijn(also former principal of the KCO) who was Werners Teacher and died much to young.
Werner could not believe his ears and thought that Hakon would move in his grave.
The way oboe players listen to oboe-playing is much different than nonplayers do,non-players are mostly not sensitive for beauty of tone but just hear the players personality and musicality.
So my advise is to loosen op on your reed demands and just let your hart get the best of your performance,the audience will love you.
