I too have been shocked to hear Holliger's sound described as "dark." I love his sound, but I never thought of it as "dark." But I feel like that word has become more a qualitative term than a descriptive one, at least here in the US, where we're all taught to strive for a "dark" tone. So when I hear just about anyone around here describe a sound as "dark," I just take that to mean that they like it. And "bright" just means they don't like it. The non-oboists in my Methods class are often aghast when I tell them that some (most?) of their oboist friends consider Holliger's sound "bright" and entirely unattractive.
