I'm just glad I bought the plastic Selmer Signet oboe as a back-up and not one of these horrendous things. I was almost going to due to the price, but I trusted my judgement on this, and just as well I did otherwise I'd be stuck with something that's less than useless.
The Signet really kicked the Chinese one's arse when I compared them next to each other, as well as letting someone else try them all out (and he isn't even an oboe player!) and he drew the same conclusion.
But it's not just eBay that's selling these things - there are well established companies selling them. I can say in all honesty that Howarth do NOT sell them - we had one come to the factory a while back, but there was nothing good that was said about it. I've no idea what became of it, and really couldn't care less.
The bodies aren't machined from ebonite, but injection moulded as the mould marks can be seen down the sides of the crown (though they have been filed out to some degree), and there are some bubbles in the plastic that can easily be seen on the bell.
