Tom hi,
At the moment I use a fine India stone, roughly 2x5 in. It works well, but is a bit coarse for my liking and I'm not so sure how flat it is any more. I cannot get my 25 year-old bevel knife sharp - I just gave up and bought a new one. I use a Herder knife for the finer work, but I like the solid feel of the bevel for the rough working.
The Shaptons are very expensive, but I read (everywhere, not just on your website) that they are worth every penny.
I can only afford two Shapton stones as an absolute max - one stone would be my preference. What grit or grits would you recommend for a reed knife? How strong are they? I keep my india stone in my oboe tote and take it everywhere in case I need to touch up a reed.
Are those diamond-on-glass stones only used for flattening other stones, or do you sharpen with them?
J.
