Same as doublereeder2, but I don't scrape for a crow. I scrape off a few millimeters of bark until I can clip the hinge off easily, I set the overlap, and then leave it to dry out for several days (at least 24 hrs, but usually much more).

BEFORE I do all this I check that the reed is correctly oriented on the staple in 3 dimensions, and that it doesn't leak - or at least, not much :-)

Evelyn Rothwell in her book recommended to slide a blade between the blades of the reed and then to slice upwards through the hinge. I always found this very difficult to achieve, and clipping is so much cleaner.
