Do you mean what part of the structure of a reed gives cover, or what part about the gouge encourages a more covered sound?

I wouldn't consider my gouge "thin" persay. I gouge at .63, which is thicker that most people, but it does depend on the balance of the reed, and the skeletal concept of the reed.
