Don't give in or compromise if she/he starts developing a bad habit! And...it is definitely possible to obtain reeds which are easy to play yet sound good. Response is crucial so that there is no biting, and lighter reeds also encourage a more covered embouchure to create the warmer sound, of course, dynamic possibilities and a big sound will be somewhat restricted, but, tension, flying high fingers, bad breathing, bad posture, will not help your student find joy in playing the oboe. I find a lighter gouge helps.
