Band books are usually very specific because they are written for educational purposes. Learning how to play a smooth legato is extremely important, but, learning how to play legato WITH tongue is also an indispensable skill. Learn how to use both to play as legato as possible, taking care that there are NO finger blurps in between. Have fun! =D
