I have absolutely no knowledge of the actual teaching (oboe or more generally) in either institution, though the oboe teachers are all pretty big names. But I know from the musicians' grapevine that the Guildhall has significant issues in terms of its management / finances, etc etc. How much that affects a student 'on the ground' is a moot point, and perhaps it doesn't bother you anyway.

Could you get to an open day at both institutions? Although be aware that they will be putting on a show, effectively, at such days in order to sell themselves (similarly with any prospectuses, promotional DVDs etc). But it might help you get a feel for which place you prefer.
