I don't think the following is a new or novel idea: how about putting a high quality, ultra thin "clear" patch down first and then putting a 0.04mm or 0.08mm high quality rubber patch over it. Personally, I never liked the clear patch because I never liked my front teeth feeing the hardness of the mouthpiece beak. I always preferred to feel the rubber. It always felt much better to me.
