 Vision problems related to playing
Author: Steve Becraft
Date:   2010-09-29 15:13

One of my former college students has developed problems with his vision that a doctor thinks is related to his saxophone playing. I believe that the main symptom is seeing spots.

Does anyone on the board have any experience with this (personally/students/ colleagues/acquaintances)?

"Floaters" (spots in your eyes) are a common occurance with advancing age and--although they can cause slight music reading problems--one usually just learns to ignor them and "press onward". However, other vison problems may be related to more serious chronic medical conditions that should be addressed by an optomologist. One of those, very personal to me, is type two diabeties which can cause eventual blindness if left untreated. Personally, I've never heard of any vision problems caused by blowing into a wind instrument. But I do think if one is having trouble reading the notes, an eye examine or medical check up is the appropriate route to follow, not advice from an amature clarinetist.

As someone who has been there and done that I would highly recommend that a person seeing spots "floaters" go see a retinal specialist.

you don't even know you should ask.

Have them see a specialist - there's also a cornial dystrophy that onsets with numerous "floaters"

Get this person to a good doctor, and don't be content with folks playing internet MD.
