 Power Barrel Occasions
Author: jacoblikesmusic

I was looking at the Doctor's Power Barrel and was thinking of purchasing one but I was wondering if the brightness is noticeable enough that it would not be appropriate for concert band purposes. I do not do marching etc. so the only time I would be using it is for playing musicals, concerts etc. Is the barrel still a good choice for increased volume in concert situations or does the sound quality not warrant the buy?

I happen to use the Doctor's Power Barrel in marching band. Strangely enough, I'm the major soloist for the show this year as a clarinetist. Anyway, I did not hear a significant difference. The tone was a noticable improvement from the stock barrel, clearly. The projection difference was not so substantial for myself.

However, I'm speaking of a plastic Bundy.

On my R13, I use the Backun Coco Traditional barrel. After playing in my orchestra and playing the solos, I noticed this made quite a difference in projection for me since last season. The resistance was slightly less allowing the tone to be big yet the sound was more dark/round. Backun can surely make a barrel.

Thank you for reminding me that I had one!! In the shuffle to Yamaha CSGs (a 54mm barrel) I forgot that I could use this in R13 Greenline situations and its been rattling around the back of my locker for about two years. So far, I like the sound very much. I wouldn't say "brighter," perhaps just a bit more "forward."

To my ears the Power barrel is mis-named. It should be Resonance barrel, for it creates a richer, fuller, more resonant sound and not a bigger sound. I've recommended them to students to good results.
