One of my students purchased the R13 from a reputable catalogue company. She only uses it at home and for performances. She uses her old clarinet for band. She is very careful with it. Within 6 months the screw on her low C# key popped out. I brought it in to my repair man, who found many things wrong with it. Four pads needed replacing, and he ended up doing some re-threading on a few of the screws. He said that the lengths of the threads were shorter than he'd ever seen on an R13. We were just speculating on the reason for this. Any other R13 stories out there, specifically the newer instruments? S.

My only complaint about a relativley new nickel plated R13 is the finish has worn off the keys very quickly. It's about three years old and the copper is showing through in a few places. It replaces one I'd had for nearly thirty years and the copper was only just beginning to show when I sold it.

My screws on the lower keys seem to get loose often. I simply keep a screwdriver in my case to tighten them whenever they start to come out. I've also experienced the same as marcia. My R13 is barely 4 years old and the nickel plating is already coming off.

My complaint was that I had to take it into the repair shop several times right after I got it because the cork was too big for the horn to fit together. I finally got so frustrated that I sold it. I did not have any problems with any other part of the horn.

I had cork problems at first with my R13 Bb. Now, a combination of a Backun barrel for the top joints and the delightful Doctor's cork grease for the others has made it fit together quite nicely. My new A, which has used the Doctor's grease since almost the beginning, has shown no assembly problems whatsoever.
