 Tonguing on Bass Clarinet
Author: Dragonpuppy

I play the bass clarinet and am very confused as to how to tongue. A player that I admire tongues quite strongly and makes a "tube-like" sound. I wondered if this was right and after seeing another player making that tube sound I started doing it. I saw another player who player with a lot more power not making any of that sound. His tonguing was more like the tonguing of a clarinetist doing normal tonguing. I listined to the radio and heard the bass without the tube like sound. What is correct?

I think the tube-like sound you might be referring to is actually slap-tonguing. This is not normal tonguing. It's an effect that's created when you create suction that causes the reed to slap back up againist the mouthpiece and make a very percussive sound. It's used widely by bass clarinetists, but is in no way a substitute for normal stacatto type tonguing.

A bass clarinet should be tongued just like a clarinet unless the piece of music specifically calls for something different. (Evan Ziporyn's CD, "This is Not a Clarinet" http://www.cantaloupemusic.com/CA21002.html demonstrates a number of different ways clarinets and bass clarinets can be played, but when he uses slap tonguing, it is because the piece of music calls for it.)
