Finally! Our first performance. Texarkana's Community band will have it's premier performance on November 11 at 7:30 p.m.
So far it seems to be going well. A hand full of people of obviously were not committed to the band. For every person that left, the same joined throughout that time.
I am guessing this is typical. ?

If I were in the area I'd surely try to attend, Becky. I'd have a problem though (besides living in California at the present time). We know the time but not Where the performance will be :|
Just out of curiosity, what has the personnel turnover rate been? How long has the band been together (rehearsing)? Most community bands seem to have more of a show up at rehearsal than a drop out problem - at least the ones I know about.
Looks like you have some nice numbers lined up, only wish more of us from out here could be there to support you folks.

Judging from the membership of our Clarinet Choir, membership does tend to change, but the total number has always stayed between 8 and 10 members. A few of us have been there since the very beginning.
I join the chorus in wishing you well on your debut!

Seems like a well rounded and rather typical community band performance. Our band ("Atlantic Pops" in Southern New Jersey) has performed at least half of those pieces in recent concerts.
Themes like Old times I & II both are audience favorites (our audiences are kind of on the gray side!) We distribute song sheets and encourage a sing-a-long to these medleys of OLD favorites.

Break-a-leg Y'all! This first concert will not only give your new band some exposure, but should lift everyones moral as our first concert did years ago. I may even get you some new members too. You have some good sellections. Themes like old times is almost a perrenial(sp? spell checker out shopping) favorite down here as it has some of the old standards in it. We get a lot of requests for it.

Becky, it looks like your band is off to a great start.
Expect a lot of turnover at the beginning. Some players will realize they don't play well enough for the group, and others will think that the group doesn't play well enough for them. Others will find that they can't consistently spend the time it takes. And others come out of curiosity. I saw the same thing in the Richardson (TX) Community Band, but after a few years the turnover decreased. We still have a few charter members after 30 years.

Congratulations and have a happy time as your band enters the concert season with a fine program. Bravura, one of my favorites, should be well taken by the audience. Don't let a small turn out put you down. All new things take time to grow.

Can not think of a better way to celebrate Veterans day than with some good patriotic music.
I plan to be there.

Thanks y'all. 
I am excited about it. For any of you who may be interested in coming and can.....It will be on the second floor of the Truman Arnold Center at Texarkana College. Everyone welcome.
The turn over isn't that big. RON was right. I think it is more of a "show up for rehearsal" thing. I just figured those that didn't show up for the last 4 rehearsal weren't planning on coming back. They were just a few.
We started 8-19-02. That was just 'yesterday'.

I find that in the adult community bands membership depends on keeping the music repretoire new and challenging or balanced to the majority of the level of musicianship.Recently last year I dropped out of a band because it was to boreing I out grew the band.I rejoined this year because they melded with another band .We are now called the Rockymountain Concertband,10-12 clar 6flutes 5saxes 6trumpets tones of lowbrass 3trombones 2bassclarinets 1basson 1oboe3-5frenchhorns lots of percusion it was alot of hard work to arrange but has had a dramatic effect on our music for example were playing or rehearsing for two public paid concerts some of the pieces are Holst suite ,Amparito Roca,,Copland tribute,Overture on a Norse theme,,Brigadon,Satiric Dances,Porgy& Bess,The Firebird ,Commando March Pictures at an Exhibition ,Libertybell and Tinpan Alley.It has been an excellent arrangement for everyone ,we are bassed in Calgary

My community band basically holds on to its core members, ranging in age from the mid 80's to 15. Rehearsals generally flucuate with this group, but they can generally be counted on for performances. Then you have those who come and go when they can. You will always have that need to go out into the community and stir up support, however. Our band has been in existence for around 55 years now, and we still send people out to talk to high school bands, post flyers, and make annoucements regarding how one can join if interested. Another popular band in the area has been aorund longer and follows many of the same practices. Once your band becomes larger and more solidified, you may even consider forming a youth band to act as a sort of "feeder program" into your main band. If you are ever interested in trying something like this, feel free to email me and I will let you know what I've been involved with and how they ahve worked. Even if you can only get some people out for a year before something pulls them away, an extra person can always come in handy.
(Some may not like how I phrased it, but as an "executive board" member I've seen the occasional need for a "body." If you promise to march 20+ people in a parade, sometimes you have to scrape the bottom of the barrel, especially when older members become unable to march, middle-agers have kids that make it difficult to be free, young people are busy with school, etc.)
Atlantic Pops... I always forget you're in my area, Jim. I saw the Pops referenced and was like, "I know them!" I just saw some of your CDs somewhere, I think. Regional Music, perhaps..
