 New clarinet?
Author: Mike

I started playing the clarinet in fourth grade, quit in 8th grade, and went back for high school marching band. Anyways, after I was all caught up with the things I forgot about it, I noticed it was in pretty bad shape. Anyone have any advice on buying a new one? Should I still go with a student clarinet? Keep in mind that I'm in high school and I'm not rich or anything...

By "pretty bad shape", does it just need pads and corks or worse? If it just needs a pad job and a couple corks, it may well be cheaper to stay with the one you have, unless you want upgrade too. That will cost much more and may be benificial to what you're using it for right now.

I wouldn't buy a new clarinet if it's purpose is to me marched.

If you do buy one anyway for marching it should be a plastic clarinet which probably means another student clarinet.

I agree if all you are going to is march, go plastic. Most old clarinets are repairable, so fixing up your existing instrument is also a good option--unless the body is badly damaged (chipped, cracked, etc.) For an affordable "step-up" instrument, the Buffet E11 model will serve you well through high school and beyond. For an expensive "step-up" (for marching as well as concert performances) the Buffet Greenline model is just what you are looking for. Superior Buffet quality and, because of its composite construction, immune to cold weather damage (will never crack). Personally, if I owned a Greenline, I would not be afraid to play outdoor concerts, but would probably still use a plastic clarinet on the marching field for fear of "accidents". Whatever you do, try to find a good mouthpiece to go with whatever instrument you finally decide on. Good luck, and welcome back.

Thanks...I'm most likely going to get some pads/corks replaced. Any suggestions for a good mouthpiece?
