As we all know clarinetists to be experimental types (at least some are), I wonder about the experiences anyone might be having with Velcro ligatures. The manufacturer now offers material which is black, in strips about 16.5mm wide which has loops on one side, hooks on the other. Similar material can be bought under the trade name Get-a-Grip, but it's in stunningly brilliant colors and not quite as wide. I've tried Velcro several times on a German mouthpiece, and it's certainly simple to apply after the first use. Just pull off, push on. I still can't convince myself yet that it's wonderful, but maybe with some more playing around... who knows? Any comments?
Regards,
John

I keep a piece of velcro, stitched back to back, in my instrument case just in case I lose or break my ligature. I works, but not very well in my experience. String is better, I think, but I'm not very good at tying it.

I've tried it in its various forms as well as other types of non-trad ligatures. I keep coming back to the "one screw" variety as offering the least hassle.

I use black velcro for soprano clarinets, but not for larger ones. I have tried the hook one side, fuzz the other side type and found that it was much bulkier and harder to adjust. I too sew 5 inch strips (give or take) face to face with 3/4 inch of overlap. I wrap the mouthpiece without a reed, then place the reed on and slide the velcro over. This makes the whole affair tighter than if I directly wrap the velcro.

It sounds like you're talking about just a simple strip of velcro. What might work better is a strap like a Timex Ironman watchband (or a blood pressure cuff) that loops back around so that the hooks and loops are on the same side of the strap. I have something similar for holding pumps to bike frames, and you can get them really tight.

The Timex type straps cost over $9..just bought one for my watch. Two rubber "O-rings" (Ace Hardware) work too and much cheaper.
