If you work on my clarinet and I'm extremely happy with your work, I might sing your praises to others who need an instrument repaired. If I had no other connection to you except as a satisfied customer, this would be a legitimate endorsement of your work.
On the other hand, if I actually worked for you (maybe selling reeds at the front counter) and you had me go on the bulletin board and sing your praises, pretending to be a satisfied customer with no connection to you, I would be acting as a shill for you.
