 Rules!
Author: Mark Charette

Next time anyone posts pictures here of items they are selling on eBay they will be banned from posting. It's an obvious and flagrant infraction of the "No self-promotion" rules.

I agree, stop this now and we can all be happy. Do it the right way or not at all (The wrong way results in being banned from the wonderful world of clarinets) :^(

I didn't see any new post with pictures; I guess that's a good thing.

Mark...maybe the rules should be spelled out. I seem to see quite a few posts that might be classified as "self promotion". Maybe the rules are somewhere and I've just not found them. I guess it's OK if someone promotes someone else?

This is the third request I have posted regarding a copy or outline of the rules. The rules seem to be a little bit secret. I suggest the BB will always have problems if you don't inform people of the boundries.
Are there any guidelines/rule anywhere on the site?

Confused as always,
Brendan

They are right there at the top of the bulletin board. That's hardly a secret.

You know, every time there are hard and fast rules there are reasons to stretch them and then people are just as confused again.

The biggest rule is the one at the top - no self promotion - meaning you can't sell or promote your own stuff here, and if I catch someone "shilling" for another I'll crack down on that, too.

Other than that it's more to do with politeness.

I'm the final arbiter of taste, and I keep things relaxed mostly. There are private messages that go out from time to time that you all don't know abouit, but egregious behavious here, such as language, attacks on others (not disagreements, but ad-hominem attacks), and violation of the "self-promotion" rule, are grounds for being banned.

And then there's the "three strikes you're out" rule. After three offenses, the guy at Vandoren that puts the one good reed in the box is notified . . . and you know what you won't be getting!!!

Fred...Read my post above (New "Flatter Tip" Vandoren V-12 3½).

The man who used to put the one good reed in each box has now left Vandoren - due to frustration...GBK

Thanks Mark. I have one last question. Is the phone to that little dude with the bad reeds at Vandoren red in colour? Kinda like the "Bat phone" - Cool.

Main Entry: 2shill

Date: circa 1916
1 : one who acts as a decoy (as for a pitchman or gambler); also : one who makes a sales pitch

Gordon --

An example:

If you work on my clarinet and I'm extremely happy with your work, I might sing your praises to others who need an instrument repaired. If I had no other connection to you except as a satisfied customer, this would be a legitimate endorsement of your work.

On the other hand, if I actually worked for you (maybe selling reeds at the front counter) and you had me go on the bulletin board and sing your praises, pretending to be a satisfied customer with no connection to you, I would be acting as a shill for you.

Thanks. I've never heard it used before. And I should have researched Websters myself, but it is good to have the clarification for forum members here.
