My teacher has asked me to give him a one sentence reply to the following questions:- Why am I learning and What enjoyment do I get from it?
I find this an interesting question and wonder how my friends here would answer ---- I'm still thinking about it ---

I think the goal of many musicians is to play perfectly. Although this never happens because music is alive and anything alive (besides Jesus) isn't perfect, this isn't possible. However, the more you learn and progress, the closer you come to becoming the musician you were meant to be. Best wishes as you reach your goals.

I think goals of musicians is not only to play perfectly, but also to play for fun. I drive myself crazy when I try to play perfectly. When I play for myself I am at my best. Maybe the question should be WHAT am I learning.

When you aren't learning, what ARE you doing? You should learn something new everyday, even if it is something stupid like tips go up 18% if the waiter/waitress writes a smiley face on the check :-)

clarinet 713...Recheck your info about what you learned "new everyday"
According to the study done by Cornell University, only the tips for waitresses rose 18% when they drew a smiley face on the check.
Tips for waiters actually decreased 3% when they drew a smiley face on their checks.

I think if you had really wanted to learn, you would have first answered the question for yourself and only then looked for other peoples opinions. Too bad you probably took the easy way out. :(

Like I said, I believe more is learned by thinking it through, coming up with one's own answer, and only then asking others for their opinions. Sure, I may need to revisit my own answer due to the input I receive from others but it's the process of thinking independently that gives us growth.

GBK- I live 20 minutes from Cornell and I haven't heard that one. (But I'm not associated with the Hotel School.) I thought I knew all the strange Cornell legends and studies; that's a new one.
I am learning partly because you sometimes fall upon those strange, delightful little facts like GBK's waitresses, Thomas Jefferson's bathrobe and Borodin's cats.

Why am I trying to learn clarinet? Because it's unfinished business from earlier in my life. Because my son and wife are extremely musical and I want to keep up. Because I like the sound I'm able to create once I make some headway. Because at my age one has to find challenges to keep one sharp, or one will deteriorate to the point where one throws the letter "a" willy-nilly into people's last names. Thus, my clarinetting will keep me from ever offending David Pachelbel.

I consider it to be a great day when I learn something NEW, such as re: our recent "busking" thread, and even if it is "bad" news [well most of the time]. We all are blessed with at least a degree of curiousity, mine seems to be strongest related to clarinets, other insts., music in general, engineering, chemistry and patents. Don
