I am learning because if I didn't learn, then my passion would have no point.

I think the goal of many musicians is to play perfectly. Although this never happens because music is alive and anything alive (besides Jesus) isn't perfect, this isn't possible. However, the more you learn and progress, the closer you come to becoming the musician you were meant to be. Best wishes as you reach your goals.

The only alternative to learning and growth is death, and I enjoy life!

I think goals of musicians is not only to play perfectly, but also to play for fun. I drive myself crazy when I try to play perfectly. When I play for myself I am at my best. Maybe the question should be WHAT am I learning.

When you aren't learning, what ARE you doing? You should learn something new everyday, even if it is something stupid like tips go up 18% if the waiter/waitress writes a smiley face on the check :-)

clarinet 713...Recheck your info about what you learned "new everyday"
According to the study done by Cornell University, only the tips for waitresses rose 18% when they drew a smiley face on the check.
Tips for waiters actually decreased 3% when they drew a smiley face on their checks.

I think if you had really wanted to learn, you would have first answered the question for yourself and only then looked for other peoples opinions. Too bad you probably took the easy way out. :(

I don't think he did. I think he's already come up with his own answer and just wante dour insight. I do that a lot here too, post a question like this and answer it for myself, then see what other people think.
What IS your answer, Roger?? I'm curious now! ;]

sorry for posting twice and for the mistake. That piece of information was on this calendar that my mom has hanging in the kitchen-and I must have remembered it wrong!

David:
Wrong! Roger said in his original post
"I find this an interesting question and wonder how my friends here would answer ---- I'm still thinking about it ---"
Like I said, I believe more is learned by thinking it through, coming up with one's own answer, and only then asking others for their opinions. Sure, I may need to revisit my own answer due to the input I receive from others but it's the process of thinking independently that gives us growth.
MOO,
Matt

My learning ethic is directly related to my tendency to forget, and in trying to keep up with this memory drain, I learn (if I remember too). Now hwere is that POST button..................oh,ya

Ah, if only my memorization skills for printed music were as good as my retention of other (mostly useless) information.
Oh well...such is life ...GBK

GBK- I live 20 minutes from Cornell and I haven't heard that one. (But I'm not associated with the Hotel School.) I thought I knew all the strange Cornell legends and studies; that's a new one.
I am learning partly because you sometimes fall upon those strange, delightful little facts like GBK's waitresses, Thomas Jefferson's bathrobe and Borodin's cats.

Matt, you mis-judge me --- at 61 I do think for myself.
David, this is what I have come up with ---
Learning is a continuance of our development and the enjoyment we get from learning enhances that development ---
--- I'm still thinking about it ---

Just out of curiosity, no offense meant to those who have done this, but WHY do people insist on throwing an "a" in my last name somewhere? I mean, it's pronounced like an "a", but still...

Why am I trying to learn clarinet? Because it's unfinished business from earlier in my life. Because my son and wife are extremely musical and I want to keep up. Because I like the sound I'm able to create once I make some headway. Because at my age one has to find challenges to keep one sharp, or one will deteriorate to the point where one throws the letter "a" willy-nilly into people's last names. Thus, my clarinetting will keep me from ever offending David Pachelbel.

I am learning because I always have something to gain. I enjoy learning because I enjoy all different subjects--not just music. The only problem is--what to be when I grow up...

I consider it to be a great day when I learn something NEW, such as re: our recent "busking" thread, and even if it is "bad" news [well most of the time]. We all are blessed with at least a degree of curiousity, mine seems to be strongest related to clarinets, other insts., music in general, engineering, chemistry and patents. Don
