I live in the boston area....
and i often see these bamboo like plants that grow all over the place, like in ditches and stuff.
do you think it might be reed rush?

and if it is reed rush, how do i use it? do i like pick it and let it tdry or osmething?

hmmm...they're kinda thick for reed rush so probably not
do you think i could go looking for reed rush? there are quite a few parks and conservation land around here. maybe it would be fun. i haven't gone hiking in a long time!
also, i live on a lake. there's plenty of cat tail plants but i haven't seen any horsetail. maybe i should look more closely.

The equisitum(sp?) or "horse tail" that I've found growing wild or that I've grown at home has not had sufficient substance(tube strength) to last for scraping reeds. Let's hope you do better. My preference is now for Vitry hollow ground knives, silicon carbide abrasive paper, and single edged razor blades. Good luck!
