hmmm...they're kinda thick for reed rush so probably not

do you think i could go looking for reed rush? there are quite a few parks and conservation land around here. maybe it would be fun. i haven't gone hiking in a long time!

also, i live on a lake. there's plenty of cat tail plants but i haven't seen any horsetail. maybe i should look more closely.

Linus -

See my postings at http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=3864&t=3742 and http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=68111&t=67955.

The pictures you found do in fact show reed rush, in addition to the highly distracting other material ;-)

Best regards.

The equisitum(sp?) or "horse tail" that I've found growing wild or that I've grown at home has not had sufficient substance(tube strength) to last for scraping reeds. Let's hope you do better. My preference is now for Vitry hollow ground knives, silicon carbide abrasive paper, and single edged razor blades. Good luck!

Don't smoke the reed rush it contains alot of toxins....but to be honest I never use dutch rush instead just a herder knife and a sharpening stone....
