Hello all,
My colleague, who plays the contrabass clarinet, is having problems with the really low notes being severely out of tune.
He says he can't practise those notes specifically because his tuner does not respond to them. Probably caused by the rich overtone content dominating over the weak fundamental.
My question is if anybody has had any luck tuning the low register of the cb clarinet with an electronic tuner.
We have already tried the Korg DT-3, Korg CA-20, Seiko ST-747 and Elko GT-909 tuners and neither of them give consistent readings.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards,

Henrik,
I don't think any tuning machine is going to be much use at this pitch unless you spend a LOT of money.
You may be better off with an audio-editing program for your computer, such as WaveLab, which will tell you the exact pitch of the fundamental of the notes you require (it certainly goes down to A0 27.5 hertz) and draw you a graph of the wave-shape.
Bear in mind, however, that at that sort of pitch, the way we hear the intonation is affected much more by the partials than the fundamental, so your audio-impression of the note may differ from what the computer tells you is true. Playing along with notes at least 2 octaves higher is a more meaningful way to check the pitch of notes that low, it's what it sounds like that matters more than it's exact pitch.
Good grunting

How about a strobe tuner? You might be able to find one somewhere. REALLY expensive ones will tune the overtones as well as the fundamental.
