Has anyone noticed the remarkable acoustical properties of music shops?
Whenever I try a new instrument or mouthpiece they always sound terrific in the shop, it's only after I've paid for them and got them home or into a concert-hall that I realise how awful they really are!
I think ALL concerts should be held in shops to guarantee a truly satisfying experience for performers and audience.

YES! Mind you, my kitchen is good. If I want to give myself a boost, I play there. Doesn't go down well with the family though.

Bathrooms are good. As well as stairwells. And Emms, you're right about the kitchen, that's my personal favorite.

I just moved into an apartment with completely hardwood floors and 12 foot ceilings...*melt* Who needs a concert hall? I have a hallway!
You're right, acoustics *are* everything!

My collective data on clarinet acoustics:
Playing in a practice room... no comment
In the band room... it's worse
Director's office... snowball rolling down a hill
My room at home... just plain ol' crap
Playing outside... good
In my living room... great
In the school hallways... really great
In the church sanctuary... PERFECT!!!
I guess acoustics are everything!!

Just before Christmas, my wife and I were walking through the archway passages under (ground level) the City Hall in Philadelphia (PA.) A street musician was in one playing recorder. The sound! He could have been a one man band! (Exteriors of this grand building can be seen on the TV show "Philly.")

On my flute I used to practice runs at my bedroom window, then listen for the echo off the houses on the next block to evaluate my run. Acoustically dead though.

I have put special damping material into the room where I practice. Almost no reflection. It sounds crap during practice, but every other room I play in is relatively terrific.

Joris, I do similar. If one practices in a live room one cannot hear the nuances of tone, and noises between notes, that tell the player that correction is needed.
