 Good American Clarinet Music/Jazz
Author: Daniel stein
Date:   1999-06-04 17:25

I was reading about a scholarship contest where they ant a twentieth century american composition as part of the repetoir...are there any good ones, except copland? Also, are there any written with jazz influence. I was thinking something like a transcription of one of the Gershwin piano preludes transcribed for clarinet. Any Help would be appreciated, I appologize for my random capitalizations.

Thank you

dan

Ever heard of Ellington/Strayhorn? For clarinet, take a look at "Main Stem." You may also want to check out some of Pat Metheny's material, e.g., "Have You Heard."

How about the Artie Shaw Clarinet Concerto???? I have done it many times with concert band and it is a real crowd pleaser as well as lots of fun to play. Orchestral parts are available for rent and I hear their is a big band accompaniment out there somewhere.

Are there recordings of this concerto available? I'd love to get one, especially the concert band version.

Gordon Jacob also wrote six unaccompanied solo pieces for clarinet. If you want contemporary, you definitely got it with those!!!

 What about Horovitz.......

What about Horovitz? He wrote an amazing jazz & blues influenced Sonatina for clarinet and piano - its fantastic!
But I'm not sure that he's American... it SOUNDS quite American though! (but that probably doesn't count!).
It's a fantastic piece, whatever nationality he was!
Try it!
