 Curious about a few things . . .

Hey everyone. I just found this website and am thrilled. Here's a quick background summary. I played clarinet for about ten years in school (3rd through HS), but never really took it seriously. Reason being I was into sports more than music. But here I am a sophomore in college and wanna take it a little more seriously. So I'm getting back into the groove. I was always decent, and my instructor thought I really coulda gone far if I just tried. Here's my questions . . .

1) I'm trying to find the approximate age/worth of my clarinet. Strictly for braggin rights. It's a Buffet Crampon, and the Serial number says K25277 (according to the list on this site, it'd be from 1938, but I just wanna verify that cause I just can't believe it to be that old.
2) I was wondering if anyone could give me some sort of advice on to how to get into jazz. I have a vandoren B45 mouthpiece and used to play size 3 1/2 or 4 reeds (vandoren) before I took that year off. Any suggestions on mouthpieces? Oh, and on a ligature too? Thanks.
3) Obviously, since I never took it too seriously, I gotta spend time learning the proper scales and blues scales and minors, etc etc. Anyone know where I can get that information? If I could figure it out, I would, but I can't. And I don't see the sense in buying a book to learn what should be extremely common knowledge out there. Thanks very much. Hope to hear from you all soon.

You have misread the serial number list. That list is for the pro clarinets only and the K numbers don't go that high and aren't in that format. You probably have an E-series such as an E-11 or its predecessor, the Evette. Looking at the Buffet site for student clarinets (they put intermediate in this category also), that serial number gives you 1970 as the year of manufacture.

Find an instructor who specializes in this area. Also learn to double on sax.

Books are better. They are usually more complete plus have exercises to firm up this knowledge and technique and illustrate how they are used.

With a "K" serial number the clarinet mentioned is an Evette & Schaeffer E-13 and yes, it was made in 1970.

First of all, your horn is perfectly serviceable for anything you choose to play.

It may need a pad here or there, but for saddling up it should be just fine.

Your mouthpiece is excellent for beginners, but may limit your tone color.

Just for grins, have a look at the 5JB from Vandoren with softer reeds.

If you're just fishing for a value in order to sell the horn, go look on eBay like the rest of us. A clarinet is worth what someone is willing to pay.

For serious progress, take another three months of lessons; that will seriously abbreviate your struggle to get back into shape.

congrats on the return!

Buy the books, or else you'll always be telling everybody "my instructor thought I really coulda gone far if I just tried." TRY ... means study. If you haven't picked it up without a book by now, what makes you think you can do it in the future without a book?

I agree with Douglas, your "K Series" does sound like a Evette & Schaeffer Student model clarinet. However, we'll never know unless you tell us the FULL NAME & LOGO INFO that is stamped or imprinted on your clarinet.

best,
mw

Yeah. THanks for all the advice. I have no intention of selling it, and I already bought a studies book. (Soem person at a store just kinda evaluated me and gave me the C. Rose 40 studies for clarinet). It looks like it's just around my playing ability. Hard to sight read for me, but easy to play once I've practied each study a few times. I'm pretty sure my instructor told me it was a student model, so it looks like you're guesses are right on. Sorry about being so vague with the information. The whole thing is "Evette & Schaeffer, Paris France, Modele Buffet Crampon". Thanks for all your help. I appreciate it.

Oh, and just FYI, I am trying to find a teacher in my area. I did some seraching on this site and am looking around. THanks again for all your help.

IMHO -

1. Learning to play jazz is all about learning to play, not about equipment. What you already have seems fine.

2. Dee's advice about doubling on sax is spot on.

3. Book-wise, there's a lot of stuff out there. I've found Jerry Coker's book "Patterns for Jazz" pretty useful. The Jamie Aebersold stuff is extremely useful. He has a web site, and even doles out a free booklet chuck full of good info.

The Jamey Abersold series that Mike mentioned is really good for beginning jazz- the books come with a CD that plays the drums and bass parts and they start simple. You also could get a "Real Book" (a really large fake book) that just offers the basic head and chords. There's an expensive, short, legal version and a cheap, big, illegal version. I have the illegal one- I have connections. I don't know where my source got it, there's no address or publisher anywhere in the book.

The Rose studies are an excellent place to start etude-wise. You might also consider investing in either a Baermann Division III or Klose scale book.

I partly agree with Mike... however I do think you should look into a more open mouthpeice... Also you will more than likely HAVE to learn how to play sax. I my experience with jazz (what little there is but anyway), all the clarinet player's I've seen in jazz bands (very few and far between) had to try out on sax anyway. I also suggest you look at some jazz books, since jazz style is completely different from classical style.
