Check http://www.woodwind-shop.com/clarinetnumbers.html.
This indicates 1969.

What else do you want to know? Since you have the instrument, you know the model, materials, etc. Other than the age, what else is there to know other than perhaps opinions on the Buffets of that time.

My memory is a bit "foggy" but I seem to recall that Buffets with serial #s 100,000 + were considered to be inferior to the 60,000 to 90,000 series as the the company was experimenting with altered bore designs. IMHO, I would recommend an earlier or "modern" Buffet. Perhaps some of the tech people on this board can give better info than I, but my recollections from the sixties would caution me against that series of numbered Buffets. On the other hand, if it plays well, ,,,,,,,,then go for it!! (but beware) Good Clarineting!!!!!!!

My experience over a large quantity of Buffet R-13's (bought, refurbished & sold) leaves me with a preference ABOVE 100,000+ actually. I have had 4 now in the 110,xxx-120,xxx & REALLY liked them. Your 105,xxx horn is probably quite good. Others agree, like Clark Fobes. I would avoid 140,xxx - 170,xxxx. Of course, all generalizations are _tremendously limited_. I have had problems with R-13's in the 60,xxx to high 70,xxx. One of the best horns I have seen is a 94,xxx. Check the instrument out thoroughly. best, mw

mw mentioned Buffet serial#94xxx. Of my 4 Buffet Bb clarinets (yes, I'm fortunate enough to own 4), my favorite is serial #962xx. It is sweet sounding, dead on intonation, and has been envied by colleagues and technicians as one of best horns they have encountered. It has needed little adjusting over the past 30+ years, and is the primary horn I use for all recitals and orchestral work. My others are 162xxx, 190xxx, and 246xxx. BTW...no cracks, ever...knock on wood

Thanks everyone for all the help. Should have said I wasn't buying, checking out for a friend. I own a LeBlanc Symphonie 3, and 2 Sekmer 9"s that I wouldn't part with. I thought there was something about that serial number that bothered me. I think at this time, Buffet was going for quanityand let the quality slde some.
Again, thanks for the assistance.

Jim, no problem. It's the QUERY that gets us going. You never know where it will end up.
GBK ... I just picked up a 86,xxxx ... got it yesterday. WOW.
[[ I think I will change my tune to 80,xxx to 120,xxx ]]
Actually so many of us have never met a Clarinet we didn't like (in some way - Larks excluded) !

mw... Looks like more and more that Buffets 80,000 - 120,000 are the older horns of choice.
I notice a distinct difference in the feel of my 962xx and my 246xxx. The older horn is much freer/ less resistant/ not as tight/ etc...
Do you think there is a reason why these older horns (80,000 - 120,000) seem to play so open, as they are really not considered the "Vintage" types? I'd be interested in your thoughts...

Buffet serial numbers in the mid to late sixties may be off by a few years.
My 102,7xx which Buffet says is a 1968 vintage, was actually purchased new in late '65 or early '66.
I am sure of this because I was a clarinet major in 65-66 and entered the US Army in early 1967 having had the instrument for a year or two.
Has anyone else noticed a manufacturer's reality break regarding serial numbers?
