Why Are Clarinet Marching Lyres So Expensive?
Author: Johnny Galaga

Everything I'm seeing online, they all start around $13 - $17 EACH. I'm seeing some that friggin' $25-$30. I'm like geez dog, it's a stupid dinky little metal thing that prolly costs $3 to make. So what's the deal? Is there a way to get these without being ripped off?

The best ones are made from aerospace-grade carbon fiber so the resonance can be amplified throughout the entire instrument, producing a richer, warmer, more focused sound with improved projection and tonal complexity.

Of course, for maximum performance, you'll want the cryogenically treated, hand-polished, acoustically optimized model with directional carbon-fiber weave. Those start at $149.95.

Actually at that price, you can buy a lyre on Amazon and get a whole other clarinet-shaped-object AND white gloves! :D

The $3 ones just hold your music.

Here, this one is $10:

Ridenour AureA Bb clarinet
Ridenour Artist MT36 mouthpiece
Vandoren Optimum black ligature (plate 1)
Vandoren Traditional #3.5 reeds
Brad Behn HR adjustable barrel

Johnny,

I did a search using "buy clarinet lyre" and couldn't find anything over $15.99.

Here are some of what I found:

1) $13.99, Yamaha Nickel Plated Lyre at J.W. Pepper & Son
2) $14.49, Yamaha Nickel Plated Lyre at Musicarts.com
3) $15.99, Yamaha Nickel Plated Lyre at Kincaidsmusic.com
3) $14.99, Selmer Nickel Plated Lyre at Kincaidsmusic.com
4) $11.49, APM Clarinet Lyre at Schmitt Music
5) $10.50, Amplate 530 Clarinet Lyre at Brightonmusic.com

What I find interesting is that they all looked almost exactly as mine pictured in the photo.

Edited for updated information.

Ah, clarinet lyres. I haven't used one since....

...the last time I used one, bulletin boards weren't things like this forum, but these things in the supermarket made of cardboard that people would use thumbtacks to pin business cards to, and babysitters would make situation wanted ads on paper from, with telephone tear off tabs at the bottom....

which got me thinking about what lyres might look like in the electronic age (e.g.):

I like how the first phone-lyre link shows it clamped over a pad.

With those devices, or any such music reader, how does one turn the page while playing?

With a Bluetooth-connected clicker clamped between the upper and lower joint (over the C#/G# key).

Notice how in several of the Gripophone photos, the models are holding the instrument wrong, with their right hands on the upper section.

I like the one that Mr. Kinder envisions. Perhaps someday it will actually exist.
