 I'm back!
Author: Reese Oller

I actually like college. I feel so free here! I can devote time to whatever I please now; practicing, classes (obviously), lessons-- heck, I even started a bowling league here!

I think I'm getting better, slowly but surely. Shoutout to Dr. David Cook (if he ever reads these posts, even) and his wonderful teaching methods and patience!

I can play bass clarinet, Eb clarinet, BBb contra, alto saxophone, bassoon at a decent level, and flute in a pinch.

Oh, I must sadly report that I am no longer playing bass clarinet. I love the instrument, but I never get opportunities to pull it out. I have an upcoming concert using it, though. Perhaps I should have sprung for a professional clarinet instead of a bass clarinet...

It does, however, have a sound like no other. I love it.

Good to have you back! Come and study in Europe someday for a while. It's good to have young people posting on this blog.

Oh, I definitely intend to. I plan to go to London first, as it is by far the easiest for me to travel to using my school's exchange program, then likely someplace in France, preferably not too far from big music scenes. I have this semester to do before I can travel, though.

Get in touch with me if you come. I've met up with quite a few members of our BBoard here. It's always been a pleasure.

i can tell you from experience that owning a bass will pay off at some point in your life. it will get you a position just for the fact that you have one and they are too expencive for most to buy on a whim.

I definitely agree with super20dan.

Playing bass and/or Eb clarinets may allow you to "get your foot in the door" with a group that isn't necessarily looking for a 1st or 2nd clarinet right at that moment. It allows them to get to know you as a musician, and lets you play with a "higher level" group.

And there are lots of instances where extra personnel are needed for bass/Eb parts. (Think: Mahler!) Be flexible, and look for the opportunities!
