Hi, I am a new player. I have a nice clarinet, but just picked up a cheap, used student model for backup/outdoor playing. The used case smelled terribly of mildewy basement. I had it serviced and cleaned and because it went back in the old case, the clarinet smells better, but still like a basement. I got a new case, but can anyone suggest how to get the smell out of the clarinet now that it has been serviced and has a nice new case? Thank you!

Leave your clarinet out to air (and somewhere safe) and hopefully the smell it picked up will soon go.

Probably best to leave the instrument out of the case for a while... somewhere safe but well ventilated and not exposed to direct sunlight , radiators etc. ( just ambient home temperatures with bit of natural air ventilation ).
Alternatively, leaving a little cloth bag of baking soda in the case will act as an odor eater, but just letting it air on a shelf is probably the best.

Use bore oil and add a few drops of lemon essential oil to it.

Being a brand snag has never worked in my best interest and rarely in others either.
I love my Yamaha Bb/A/Eb but would never played a Yamaha bass clarinet, unless it was revamped and somehow exceeded what the Buffet Prestige has to offer.
I love my Vandoren m13 Lyre for my Bb clarinet, but I can't find bass or eb mouthpieces from that brand that works well for me. Fobes for Eb and Selmer Concept for Bass.
For ligatures, none of them are the same brand. Sumner for Bb/A, Bonade for Eb and Rovner Platinum for bass. All inverted.
Simply put, it would be much harder to play my best if I was stuck with all one brand. Which is a shame, I do wish everything could match! But playability matters more.

Without getting rid of the odor's source, the problem may not be completely solved by ventilation or substituting different smells. Concrobium kills mold and is apparently safe.

Johnny: excellent advice! I hang my swab on my music stand and even when I transport my clarinet; I put it in the outsede pocket of my case.

The great Pete Fountain on the clarinet he inherited from the great Irving Fazola:
"Pete tells an interesting story regarding Faz's instrument: "Faz's mother gave me his mouthpiece, which broke later on in years.
Then his mother called me and gave me his clarinet after he died, which is an old Albert system Buffet.
I still have it, but every time I play it, it reeks of garlic. I swear! He loved to eat garlic!
When he died, they put his clarinet in a case. I guess he didn't swab it out too much, and so the garlic just sort of "marinated" in there.
After two or three years his mother gave it to me. I sent it to Leblanc to try to get the garlic smell out, but they couldn't get it out.
It's in the wood. I can take it on stage and play a couple of choruses, but once the wood warms up, the garlic smell comes right out."

If only they made garlic counters you could wave it over the instrument periodically and establish its garlic half life...... crackle... crackle.
