Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has any good ideas about finding a used RC Prestige A. Currently, I have an old R13 A from 1967 that I would like to replace and pair a good clarinet with my RC Prestige Bb from 1987. Please let me know if anyone knows of any available.
Thanks,
Daniel

Hi danielB,
Your best bet is to get one from Europe, and not a used but a new one - if you can afford it.
If you intend to go to Paris or Madrid in near future, there are excellent shops where you could try more than one example.
You get about 20% off their price as the VAT refund, which is very competitive vs. domestic prices.
I would not buy online from Europe because it seems that they are selling clarinets that are left over. At least, it was my and one of my friend's experience- we ordered online and the new clarinets came but they just did not have the response and the tone.
Otherwise, look on eBay, Reverb but you'd need to have a very good eye and read into the description very carefully- there are some very decent sellers and some bad ones out there.
***You cannot claim VAT (tax) refund on used instruments in Europe, that's why I suggested a new one.

The online price here in Spain for the RC A is currently €5,429 . That's from "La Musa" who are a reputable online shop with probably the best range of clarinet material .
Just to give you a price reference.

La Musa will ship to the US, final price $4,470 for the Bb Prestige RC.
However, you cannot try that instrument. My 'gut feeling' is that shops selling online those instruments that were not bought at the store. Again, it's my impression from three clarinets bought online. I bought an R13 Prestige in A and my friend got R13 Prestige A and Bb.

I felt comfortable buying a new Yamaha A-clarinet online from Europe, because Yamaha's are very consistent from one to another. I also know of several others who have had good experiences doing the same. However, Buffet's tend to be more variable, so I would hesitate to order one without trial. However, some places, such as Dawkes (U.K.), have quite flexible return policies, so it might be worth the savings.
Another option is to contact Lohff and Pfeiffer to see if they have, or can get, a suitable used A-clarinet. If they sell you one, you can be sure it is good. They service clarinets for many European artists, and customers often trade in their old horns when they purchase new ones.

Out of curiosity, I checked Lohff and Pfeiffer's website and they currently do not have a RC prestige in A.
Since the RC/RC Prestige model is only now becoming more popular in the USA, I think the OP could wait a long time before a used one becomes available.
On the other hand, In Europe the RC is much more popular than the R13 and a shop where I bought my A, has a used RC Prestige in A according to their website.
Too bad, we cannot take advantage of VAT refund if buying a used instrument.

Lohff and Pfeiffer do incredible work on instruments, and their prices on instruments for sale are very fair.
The one thing they seem to *not* do well, however, is maintain their website. It (clarinet.dk) still shows a used clarinet that I bought through them over 4 years ago! They might well not have a used RC Prestige A available . . . but perhaps they do. I'd email them at info@clarinet.dk and ask - if they don't have one, they might have an idea when/if/how one might become available.

Jordan,
I am not questioning their work quality or pricing.
I believe that in the US clarinets market finding a used RC Prestige in A may be challenging and it's much easier to find one in Europe.

There is one I saw on eBay in Germany for 1,850 €. Looked pretty good and was selling in a double case with one side empty.

Ha, I had the chance to buy one of these around 2018, one of the best A clarinets I've played over the years... but then I worked out that it was stolen, and who originally owned it, and had it returned to its owner. She won't sell it to me (despite having bought a new pair of clarinets to replace the stolen ones) so I'm not sure what the moral of the story is, but I guess I did the right thing.

SaxQuest/ClarinetQuest in St. Louis, MO. deals in new and used instruments, and Ashantee Music in Dry Ridge, KY deals in used instruments.
