I admit to not knowing exactly where the voice of reason ends, and the cantankerous old man begins. So apologies in advance.
With that said....why (knit your own ligature)?!
And to answer my own question, maybe you enjoy crafting--which if the case, is fine by me.
But apart from that, this $4 ligature https://store.weinermusic.com/products/standard-bb-clarinet-ligature is going to, IMHO, take 99.5% of clarinet players 99.5% of the way to being the best version of their clarinet selves.
As if we didn't debate this stupid reed strap enough here, now we're going to open's "Pandora's box" with additional factors like the materials used to create the device, and the pattern of knitting most suited to optimal play.
"Well, when playing Weber's 2nd, you'll never find me dead playing with a ligature with less than 70% rayon and 20% cotton, and at least 7.2% European imported spandex woven together in a knit one purl three pattern. It would be madness to approach the piece with anything less."
Sigh.
Disclaimer: I play Vandoren ligature, but its double threaded design facilitates quick reed changes, and this alone is what attracts me to it.
