Hi there!
I’m a college sophomore studying musicology and composition at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. I was also, up until very recently, an avid clarinetist.
I took a break from playing (something I never thought I’d do) after the pandemic took full effect in my senior year of high school. Now, as a music student, I’m feeling more and more that I both need and very much want to launch into playing again.
The clarinet I have now is over 100 years old, and while it has served me well, it’s time that I purchase a newer clarinet of professional quality (by a modern standard). As much as I don’t want to break the bank, I realize that the sort of instrument I’m looking for may just have to cost me a pretty penny.
That said, does anyone have any suggestions for places where I can be sure to find the instrument that’s right for me? Preferably in NYC, but if someone, by some miracle, knows of a place nearer to me that would be great too!

Hi Flan, while not in NYC but in northeastern PA (which would be a shorter drive from Ithaca anyway), I have a wide stock of clarinets to try. Just throwing something out--
I bought my 3rd (and last) Buffet R13 from I THINK Poppa's Music Store in Mineola on Long Island in 1999 for $1,997. They sell for like $4-6K now. Maybe check out they're website. They say they have professional brands. If I remember correctly that that's the place, they let me try out several in the store.

Another good place to try Buffets now that the Buffet showroom in NY has closed is Liam Burke at 220 Riverside Blvd (by appointment only). Burke is an excellent clarinetist and authorized Buffet dealer as well as a leading repair person. https://burkewoodwindrepair.com
If you like Yamaha clarinets you can try them, also by appointment, at the Yamaha Artists Services, 689 5th Ave in New York. Call 212-339-9995. The well-respected repair artist Tomoji Hirakata works there. He does intricate and exacting work and can even make special barrels on request.

I'd like to add a "second" to Liam Burke. He also has a studio in CT, so you can avoid going into NYC. I purchased a new Buffet Festival Bb from him 6 months ago.
He had several in stock for me to try, gave me all the time and space I needed to audition them.
He's a very pleasant and helpful guy, no sales pressure.
Most importantly, he set the clarinet up beautifully! (Swapped out a lot of the factory pads and regulated the keywork, all included in the purchase price.) His training with Mark Jacobi (who does my regular repairs and referred me to Liam) is apparent in his work.

Another vote for NY clarinet shop in Brooklyn, NY.
The owner is extremely knowledgeable and, in addition to being an excellent player, is also an excellent tech.
I believe he hand-selects the instruments he sells.

I don't know the first 2 stores mentioned, but I've had nothing but positive experience with the rest of them, so in terms of vendor integrity the only question is, will you click with the particular clarinet you play from any of their inventory(ies), rather than "can I trust this guy?" Knew Jonathan Watkins when he ran WWBW in NYC (he made it a wonderful store to shop at); Tomoji (now at Yamaha) was his tech and it was a privilege to have him work on your horns; Michael Norsworthy (NY Clarinet Workshop) is a superb, ultra-conscientious craftsman (I think he prepares Michael Lowenstern's bass clarinets, and also, um, MINE, but I'm nobody obviously) and because he's an accomplished player too he should be able to make any fine-detail adjustments on an instrument for you. All I know about Liam is I got to hear him play the Copland Concerto when he was at Juilliard (absolutely wonderful performance), and that a lot of pros in NYC take their clarinets to him now.
Nice thing about NY Clarinet Workshop is it's a short subway ride from Manhattan, & located in one of those trendy Brooklyn areas, so you can try instruments, take a patisserie break, and go back & try some more! Happy hunting!

Just to add some color commentary to Tom's post, Poppa's Music Store is also know as Weiner Music, the well established and known mail order/internet establishment that specializes in woodwind players needs.
I think, for some purposes that may serve keeping track of their store front versus mail order business lines, the overall business operates under these two names, but I can't imagine that the inventory of instruments to try is any different whether you visit them in person, or deal with them online.
I've dealt with the for many years, in person and online . They are very reliable, have a large inventory and competitive prices.

You have 4 in NYC listed who all are tremendous.
Make sure that whatever you get is “set up” by them. Fresh from the factory all Clarinets need a little bit of extra adjustments/love right away to make sure all pads seal well and springs are the right tension.
