Does anybody know how long one should lay off playing the clarinet after cataract surgery? My ophthalmologist doesn't seem to have ever been confronted with this problem. Thank you. Once I've had surgery, I will no longer have any excuse for playing so many wrong notes!

I wish I could remember! I had my surgeries 16 years ago (in my mid-30s--I had early developed cataracts).

I also play drums and resumed practice after 24 hours with no problem. Blowing my clarinet within that time frame also had NO negative effect.

My doc just told me to lay off for at least 2 weeks. I played a bit after that without blowing hard and chopping up phrases unmercifully. At the 1 month post-op exam she gave me a green light to do as I wished.

This is very individual among ophthalmologists, apparently. I had mine done over the summer, and my doc asked me not to play for a week. I'm guessing that a lot of this is the individual physician's superstition.
(Disclosure: I'm a retired physician myself, but I was a cardiologist so this is completely out of my wheelhouse!)

In 2015 my cataract surgeon said, "Clarinet is fine at 1.5 weeks. Tuba is fine at 3 weeks. Flights are fine at 3 days." I had told him that clarinet uses a smaller volume of air at a higher pressure relative to tuba, which presumably accounts for the difference. I had also asked when air travel would be OK.

Immediately.I had an operation a week ago.
I asked my doctor, and she said if is something like a
trumpet give it a month, but for flute or clarinet go ahead.

I'm wondering if any of you whose docs told you to wait some period of time asked what the potential damage would be. You have to be careful to try not to sound defiant with a question like that. But unless any of them had known or read of instances where playing an instrument after cataract surgery had actually caused harm, I'd suspect they're all working on intuition and "an abundance of caution."
Might it be best to ask something more specific, like whether or not the blowing pressure generated by playing could cause injury in the surgical area? Most doctors, prompted by a specific question, will then follow up with a wider range of information.

After my recent surgery, the right glass lens was useless. During the following 3 weeks, I could read with only 1 eye. Music on the right side was difficult. With the new glasses.I was sensitive to glare and anything bright. I wear
Prescription sunglasses. Haven’t tried driving at night yet.

When I had cataract surgery the surgeon told me I could play after a week. I did and suffered no ill effects. I could read the music more easily, but I couldn't play it any better. :-)

I had emergency detached retina surgery when I was to have cataract surgery. No surgeries last year because of Covid. So about 3 years in progress. Floaters in right eye hindered reading.

LFabian: I know it sounds like a silly home remedy, but try drinking pineapple juice every day for eye-floaters. It works! -whereas nothing else does. Let me know if this works.

I agree with ruben, with additional advice that taking Bromelain (over-the-counter) in lieu of pineapple juice is way more effective. Eating raw pineapple won't hurt either.

Thank you ruben and farabout ! That's an amazing tip about the floaters; had them forever and have just had to copê but this is worth a try - Bromelain because I don't do well with raw pineapple (because juice is pasturized that is less of a problem for me but I suppose that also reduces the activity of the enzyme?).
Hope your procedure is "comme une lettre à la Poste" Ruben. Be sure to ask about what type of visual adjustement you want post-surgury; apparently it can be tilted towards close up or distance vision. I'll be there is a few years and need to learn more about this.

I think Karl's "abundance of caution" (yes, a hackneyed and probably meaningless dodge) and my "superstition" probably sum up the reasons for telling patients not to play after cataract surgery. There's no good literature on the topic that I can find.
