 Vandoren Reed Resurfacer Alternative

I like this product. The wand it comes with is less useful for me.

I guess I like moving the reed against the grinder rather than vice versa, much as their are situations where doing the opposite is probably best, as I do with other reed adjustment tools.

The grit on the one I bought years ago has worn down. Off I went to price another and at $60 for an etched piece of glass that size....I shook my head.

After finding glass nail files too narrow to serve my reed adjustment purposes I stumbled upon and bought this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TBS96SS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's a larger piece of etched glass designed to remove dead skin. It's $13, not $60. It arrived today and I feel like it will definitely be useable as a reed resurfacer: its grit slightly more abrasive than a new Vandoren reed resurfacer, but nothing I can't compensate for by applying less pressure with my reed against its surface.

Thought I'd share. :)

Actually I stand corrected. The item is etched on both sides with the finer grit side being comparable to the grit of the Vandoren reed resurfaced.

Some years ago I tried to get a local glass cutter to sand blast a piece of glass for me to get a MORE abrasive surface than the Vandoren one, which I've always found a bit annoyingly "fine" for my liking. With the Vandoren one I felt that the surface wasn't abrasive enough, so you ended up "squashing" fibers to flatten rather than cutting...
Unfortunately I found the sand blasting at my local place (in the biggest industrial city in NZ) couldn't produce a surface any more abrasive that 1600 grit paper, when I was looking for 400 or 600.
This skin sander thingy looks more promising...

Can you tell us the dimensions of the heel sander?
Also - just in case you didn't realise, you do know you can "clean" the Vandoren one, scrubbing the cane out of the gritty surface, to restore some cutting power? (you probably knew that already, but some don't)

You can simply clean the Vandoren tool with an old tooth brush under a running tap.

The device is around 4" (10.16cm) X 2" (5.08cm) as shown in the pictures...

And as far as cleaning the Vandoren is concerned, it seems for me that no greater degree of abrasiveness is restored at this point by doing so.

Nail emery boards would work too. Cheaper too.

I considered--etched glass ones too.

The products I found were, IMHO, not wide enough.
