 Refacer for Bass Clarinet mouthpieces?
Author: Ken.

My backup bass clarinet mouthpiece is a Selmer C* which I am thinking about having refaced.

I was thinking about contacting Brad Behn as he did a great job restoring a broken clarinet mouthpiece recently and I know he makes bass pieces. However, I'm not sure he plays bass clarinet, at least professionally.

Others I am considering are Walt Grabner and Clark Fobes who I understand both play bass. I briefly tried a Grabner Lawrie Bloom several years ago and liked it.

When selecting a refacer for bass clarinet would you choose someone who is a known bass clarinet player?

Ramon Wodkowski did a great job on my Selmer C* He also plays bass clarinet.

Keith Bradbury (Mojo Mouthpiece) is another skilled refacer who plays bass clarinet.

Ramon Wodkowski did two Selmer C* refaces for me late last year. They play great.

Brad does play bass and does excellent work. If Clark Fobes is accepting refacing work, his bass mouthpieces are wonderful. Dave McClune is another option

You've already mentioned Walter Grabner's Bloom mouthpiece, which I also like very much. But my other favorite is a very old Lelandaise that was refaced by Matson. I don't really know how well he played any of the clarinets, but it wasn't his profession.

Of course, I can't recommend Matson for obvious reasons. I think any of the people mentioned so far would do a great job.

Clark Fobes gets my vote.

I believe that some years back Clark Fobes discontinued refacing work unless it was one of his own mouthpieces, but it doesn't hurt to email him to ask! Dave McClune has done some nice refacing of several Selmer C* that my university has on hand. And even if Brad Behn doesn't play a lot of bass clarinet, he absolutely knows what he is doing!

More recently, I had Tim Wright reface a previously-refaced Selmer C*, and it is exquisite.

Is it bad form (or disallowed altogether) to nominate oneself here?

Not that I am an authority, but it is fine to throw your hat in the ring. The more the merrier!

I'd like to recommend Nikhil Bartolomeo's mouthpiece work. He's done a few of my bass pieces along with numerous soprano mouthpieces and they play wonderfully. Even after trying many of the "go-to" guys of the industry, I still go to Nikhil. As the cherry on top, he offers very reasonable rates.

I would also add Lee Livengood, both a bass clarinet player and mouthpiece crasftsman. He worked on two of my Bass clarinet mouthpieces, a Selmer C* and a Charles Chedeville and he does very very fine work. I think he was originally referred to me by Ed Palanker (a very fine bass clarinet player) via this message board.

For trials, I have been sending out boxes of 4 mouthpieces I have for sale. You typically pay for one while you have them. They can be 4 very different facings or 4 similar ones around spec you currently like. Keep one or send them all back for a refund.

Sometimes the client will want something between two I sent out. Then we work on a custom facing for them.

I use a David Spiegelthal refaced bass mouthpiece which I adore. He sent me two samples to chose from, both equal fine.

Brad Behn does refacing work.

Given the absolute perfection of the facing on the Sono bass mouthpiece he recently made to my specifications, I would go straight to him.

I too have had Brad Behn do work for me and his work is impeccable! I would trust him to work on any of my mouthpieces.
