 Happy Juneteenth!: African-American Clarinet Contributions
Author: BethGraham

Hi, All --

Usher wrote a thoughtful opinion piece in today's Washington Post on the importance of Juneteenth and how Americans might choose to commemorate it, should it become a national holiday. He suggests that the day could be used to amplify African-American contributions throughout American culture and commerce.

(Link to article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/06/18/usher-its-past-time-make-juneteenth-national-holiday/)

That made me think, why wait? Why don't we think today about individuals and businesses that have contributed to the clarinet: performers, composers, businesses, and the like.

Let's use this thread to highlight African-American achievement in the field and to learn from one another. (Apologies for the U.S.-centric post.)

Beth

Kyle Rowan is maintaining a Google Docs list of works for clarinet by black composers. It's been growing as people send him additions. You can see it here:

From the late Eberhard Kraut, elaborate essay on Selmer,´especially Albert system, clarinets and performers:

I ran it through Google translate, didn't read it and hope it is understandable (can't attach it here; new posting).

Google translation of Eberhard Kraut's essay. For the photos, you'd have to look into the German original (above).
