Years ago I composed a 2 page unaccompanied clarinet solo (not copyright). Anyone have success or advice on how to find a publisher for it? I'm not interested in "self-publishing" or spending any money....

You might try a small publisher like Emerson Edition in the UK. Check the Clarinet Journal for ads for small publishers in the US specializing in clarinet music.

I'd just put it on IMSLP wirh a CC licence.
Composers, even famous ones, rarely make much money from publishers - most of their compensation comes through royalties from public performances and mechanical rights (i.e. recordings).
Do you belong to BMI or ASCAP?

Thanks for the advices. I will try that UK one and the Cl. Journal. Not looking to make any significant money, just want to get my work copyright and available out there without it costing me anything (online, I suppose). I'm looking for someone to switch out the handwritten music to printed music, as I am a computer dope.

I'm also a computer dope, but these days publishers won't even bother to look at your work if it's in manuscript form. My royalties for 2019 were 4 euros 80! I imagine they will go down with the recent lock down.

Depending on the style of your composition I might know of a publisher that may take it. Emerson probably won’t take it because they have a long backlog. There must be many in the US that you can approach? You could try Boosey and Hawkes and I know Schott do look at submissions. Stainer and Bell are another in the UK as well as GoodMusic.
Good luck

cigleris, Thanks. I did contact Emerson but haven't heard back yet (time zone, etc.). They have listed my book, as they are familiar with it's publisher (but the publisher isn't a music publisher).
My piece is contemporary of course, not unlike some of the etudes in my book.
You said you may know of a publisher who would look at it? I could scan it and send a copy to them (and one to you)?

You don't need to do anything special to retain copyright if you can prove that you're the original composer of someone tries to infringe on your rights. You automatically have copy rights.
Of course, there is a formal process that you can go through if you want to spend the money, and it's always a good thing to declare somewhere on the page that you have the copy right, though even that is not strictly necessary.

Bmcgar, that would only apply to self publishing. If it does get published then effectively the composer hands over all copyright claims to the publisher in return of a percentage of sales. Once that agreement ends then copyright should theoretically revert back to the composer or family/estate (if the composer has died). Unfortunately this isn’t always the case as I’ve found out with my own dealings rescuing forgotten works.
Tom, yes by all means drop me an email. I can’t make any promises though.

Sheet Music Plus (a sponsor of this site) has SMP Press. You can upload your piece as a PDF (it can be in manuscript form). You retain the copyright and decide on the price, they sell it and split the money with you.

elmo, Yes, I am considering Sheet Music Plus--they've sent me the info. (which looks a little complicated to ME, but I can get some help...). Seems the only disadvantage is the piece can only be sold through them. They certainly get good reviews from purchasing customers.
